Towards the end of last term, Brisbane Montessori School was delighted to partner with Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary on a special conservation initiative to support the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. We’re grateful to the Lone Pine team for inviting our school to be part of this wonderful project!
As part of the initiative, Lone Pine generously provided Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine seedlings for our school to plant, helping create a butterfly habitat corridor right here in our local community. We also welcomed an expert from Lone Pine’s Conservation Team, who shared insights into this remarkable native butterfly and the importance of protecting and restoring its natural habitat.
The initiative was featured on 7 NEWS’ Sunnyside segment, hosted by Samantha Heathwood, shining a spotlight on the important conservation work taking place in our community.
💚 Why does this matter 💚
The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is a highly endangered native species, and its caterpillars rely on the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa) as their sole food source. By planting these vines, schools and community organisations can help establish habitat corridors across Brisbane, supporting the butterfly’s movement and recovery.
A huge thank you to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary for this opportunity and for the important work they do to protect our native wildlife. We’re proud to play a part in this initiative and help nurture a more sustainable future for generations to come.
