This term, our Year 9 students are diving into Earth sciences and sustainability, exploring real-world solutions to climate challenges. Through hands-on, inquiry-based learning, they’re building a deep understanding of greenhouse gases and the role of renewable energy in our future.
In true Montessori spirit, students are connecting theory with experience by investigating how trees naturally capture carbon through photosynthesis and store it as biomass, a process known as carbon sequestration.
Last Friday, learning extended beyond the classroom as our students ventured into the beautiful nature reserve along the Brisbane River. Surrounded by fresh air, open space, and shady trees, they worked alongside their science teachers to observe, measure, and record how carbon is stored in nature. Using practical fieldwork techniques and technology, students estimated how much carbon trees hold by analysing their size and growth.
This is student-led, experiential learning at its best, where curiosity meets real-world impact.
