Maria Montessori: A Legacy That Still Guides Us

Community Monday, 31 Aug 2026

Today, we celebrate the birthday of a remarkable woman whose work transformed our understanding of children and their potential.

Our students gathered in the Hall for a special Birthday Walk honouring Maria Montessori's legacy. Forming a circle around the sun, students from each area of the school walked around it to mark each decade of her journey, carrying signs with the corresponding years; a simple, meaningful way to reflect on how far her philosophy has travelled.

More than a century ago, Dr Montessori looked at children differently. Through careful observation, she saw them as active participants in their own development, driven by a natural desire to explore and learn. She understood that with the right environment, freedom within limits, and respectful guidance, children build independence, concentration, confidence and responsibility.

That vision still lives here at Brisbane Montessori School in every prepared environment, every chosen material, and every moment a child is supported to 'do it for themselves.' It lives too in the Montessori adult: observing before intervening, following the child, and protecting their concentration.

This is Maria Montessori's enduring gift - not just something we remember, but something we practise and carry forward every day.

Happy birthday, Dr Maria Montessori 💛
