MMUN | A Journey to Remember

MMUN Wednesday, 25 Mar 2026

In March, seven of our Upper Primary students from Brisbane Montessori School embarked on an unforgettable journey to New York City, accompanied by Scott, Naomi, and Jane, to attend the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) Conference held at the Marriott Marquis from 11 – 14 March 2026.

The adventure began with a long but exciting journey from Brisbane, travelling via San Francisco before arriving in the heart of Manhattan. From the moment they stepped into Times Square, students were immersed in the energy, diversity, and pace of one of the world’s great cities.

The MMUN conference was a powerful and inspiring experience. Representing Mexico, our students took on the role of global delegates, researching real-world issues, preparing position papers, and engaging in formal debates.

From a student perspective, the experience was both challenging and empowering. They spoke in front of large audiences, collaborated with peers from around the world, and worked together to negotiate resolutions on complex global topics. The sense of purpose was tangible — students weren’t just learning about the world, they were actively participating in it.

Many moments stood out:
> Standing at the microphone in a formal assembly, presenting ideas with courage
> Collaborating with new peers to solve global challenges
> Experiencing what it feels like to have a voice in matters that shape our world

It was a beautiful expression of Montessori education in action — independence, responsibility, and global citizenship.

Exploring New York City

Following the conference, they spent four days exploring some of New York’s most iconic landmarks and experiences.

Students visited:
> The Statue of Liberty, an inspiring symbol of freedom and hope
> The 9/11 Memorial, a powerful and reflective experience
> Rockefeller Center and the breathtaking views from the Top of the Rock
> Central Park, where we enjoyed ice skating together
> The American Museum of Natural History, sparking curiosity and wonder
> The famous FAO Schwarz toy store

Our students also experienced the magic of Broadway with The Lion King, made even more special by an exclusive backstage tour, giving students a glimpse into the artistry and professionalism behind the performance.

Closer to our base in Times Square, students delighted in exploring the M&M Store, Hershey’s Chocolate World, and the Disney Store, not to mention a stop for bubble tea at Gong Cha - small moments of joy woven into a very big adventure.

Growth Beyond the Classroom

This truly was a trip of a lifetime. Beyond the landmarks and experiences, the most significant growth came from what students developed within themselves.

They grew by:
> Navigated busy city streets with increasing independence
> Managed their time, belongings, and responsibilities
> Built confidence in communicating with others
> Demonstrated resilience in a fast-paced and unfamiliar environment
> Strengthened friendships and formed new connections

Most importantly, they experienced themselves as capable, global citizens.

Here at Brisbane Montessori School, we are incredibly proud of the way each student represented themselves, our school, and the Montessori values we hold so deeply.
