Camping experiences are an important part of Montessori education because they support the development of independence, resilience, responsibility, and a sense of community connection.
Montessori environments are designed to help children gradually build confidence in caring for themselves, contributing to a group, solving problems, and adapting to new situations. Camp, including our Cosmic Camp, provides a natural extension of this learning beyond classroom walls, offering children meaningful opportunities to practise life skills, strengthen social connections, and build trust in their own capabilities.
In Term 3 of each year, all Lower Primary students attend camp together at the YMCA, even our new 6-year-olds. Returning to a familiar environment with familiar activities helps children feel safe and secure while gently building their confidence and independence away from home. Being alongside peers and trusted staff in a consistent setting allows the children to focus on developing practical life skills, resilience, and
connection within their classroom community.
As students move into Upper Primary, the camp experiences evolve with them. Rather than attending the same location each year, the Upper Primary classes rotate through a variety of camps and experiences. This approach strengthens each class community while also introducing children to new environments, challenges, and opportunities.
The variety of experiences supports the growth of independence, adaptability, problem-solving, and social confidence as the children mature. Families can play an important role in helping children prepare for camp. Encouraging your child to practise packing and unpacking their own bag helps build responsibility and organisation skills. Finding a familiar comfort item, such as a small toy or blanket, can provide reassurance and a sense of connection to home while away overnight.
