Here at Brisbane Montessori School, Production and Exchange is a vital aspect of adolescent development in a Montessori environment. This work invites students to engage in meaningful, real-world activities in which economic concepts emerge from lived experience rather than abstraction.
Within a carefully prepared environment, our Middle School adolescents design and operate enterprises, market stalls, and micro-economies. Through this work, they are not simply learning about systems of production and exchange - they are actively participating in them. This hands-on engagement allows them to experience cause and effect, responsibility, and interdependence in concrete, meaningful ways.
As they collaborate, create, and contribute, students develop practical life skills alongside a growing awareness of fairness, value, and service. Their work is purposeful, community-connected, and guided by their own interests and initiative.
Rooted in the vision of Dr Maria Montessori, this approach reflects the belief that education should prepare children not just academically, but through lived experiences that nurture competence, creativity, and confidence, equipping them to navigate the world thoughtfully and independently.
