The Montessori Market Stall is a beautiful example of how learning unfolds across the planes of development, with experiences introduced in the early years gradually developing into meaningful, real-world applications.
The foundations are laid in the First Plane (0–6), when children develop independence through movement, exploration and participation in everyday life. Through Practical Life activities, children learn to care for themselves, their environment and others. They prepare food, work with their hands and develop coordination, concentration, order and responsibility. These seemingly simple experiences build the practical and social skills that will support more complex learning in the years to come.
In the Second Plane (6–12), Cosmic Education invites children to connect their growing knowledge and skills with the wider world. The Market Stall provides a wonderful opportunity for this to happen. What begins as classroom learning becomes a genuine, collaborative project with a real purpose and audience.
Students work together to develop a business plan, create products and establish pricing. They may use produce grown in their garden, or make baked goods, woven bracelets, hair ties and other handmade products. Along the way, they measure ingredients, calculate costs, solve problems, make decisions and communicate with one another.
The experience extends well beyond creating products. Students take responsibility for setting up and packing down the stall, managing a float, budgeting for a small stall fee and interacting with customers. In doing so, they develop practical skills in marketing, communication, teamwork, financial literacy and customer service all within a purposeful, hands-on experience.
Unique to Brisbane Montessori School, students from Lower Primary through to Middle School have the opportunity to participate in an after-school Market Stall during term time. Completely student-led, the stalls are designed to reflect the experience of a real weekend farmers market, giving students the opportunity to put their learning into practice within a supportive community.
The Market Stall also demonstrates the power of experiential learning. Students are not simply learning about money, business or collaboration; they are actively experiencing these concepts and seeing the consequences of their decisions. The money raised is then used to support class projects or donated to charity, helping students understand that their work can have a positive impact beyond themselves.
In this way, the Market Stall nurtures far more than entrepreneurial skills. It builds confidence, independence, responsibility, collaboration and a growing sense of contribution. It allows children to see themselves as capable members of a wider community and to recognise that their knowledge and actions can make a difference.
Ultimately, the Market Stall reflects the Montessori vision of education: supporting children to become increasingly independent, socially responsible and connected to the world around them. It is a small but meaningful step towards the vision of Erdkinder - young people who understand their place in the world and their responsibility to contribute to and care for the Earth.
