At Brisbane Montessori School (BMS), creativity, music and technology are far more than subjects. Together, they form a pathway to connection, discovery and lifelong learning.
Step inside The Jacaranda Room; what was once known simply as the music room has evolved into something much more expansive: a vibrant creative and technology hub where melody meets mathematics, rhythm shares space with robotics, and every student is encouraged to explore, create and collaborate.
Music has always been at the heart of the Jacaranda Room. From our youngest Children's House students discovering the joy of singing, movement and rhythm, through to the Lower Primary Choir, Upper Primary Band, Senior Band and private instrumental lessons before and after school, music resonates throughout every stage of a child's journey.
For students who are curious about music but haven't yet learned an instrument, our Rock Ensemble provides an exciting and welcoming place to begin. It offers a hands-on introduction to playing in a group, building confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.
Alongside music, the Jacaranda Room has grown into a home for digital technology. Students take their first steps in coding through beginner-friendly, hands-on activities, then build toward web development, learning to design and build their own websites from the ground up. Music production introduces students to the technology behind the sound, showing them how melody, rhythm and recording come together in a digital studio environment. Cybersecurity practices round out this strand, teaching students how to think critically about safety, privacy and responsible behaviour in an increasingly connected world.
Design technology invites students to bring their ideas into the physical and digital world. In digital animation, students learn to plan, storyboard and bring characters and stories to life on screen. In woodwork, they develop practical skills, patience and precision, learning to design and build with their hands. Underpinning both is a strong focus on outside-the-box creative thinking, encouraging students to approach problems from new angles, experiment freely and see mistakes as part of the design process.
Learning in the Jacaranda Room extends well beyond performance, code or craft. Students explore the rich history of music, discover musical traditions from cultures around the world, and uncover the many ways music, design and technology connect with other areas of learning. A time signature becomes a lesson in fractions. Song lyrics reveal the power of poetry and storytelling. A line of code becomes an exercise in logic and sequencing. A piece of woodwork becomes a lesson in measurement and problem-solving. Rhythm, design and code alike develop pattern recognition, listening and mathematical thinking. Together, they naturally bring literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and cultural understanding into meaningful, connected learning.
More importantly, students learn to listen - to themselves, to one another, and to the world around them. They develop confidence through performance and presentation, resilience through practice and iteration, and empathy through creating and building together.
The Jacaranda Room is a place where curiosity is celebrated, creativity is nurtured, and every child discovers that music, design and technology are not simply things we learn, yet they are things we experience, share and carry with us for life.
