Visit to Cherboug as part of Connecting the Dots throughy Culture Professional Development

On Saturday 13th September, Lucy Reynolds, Jane Walker and Carolyn Saunders took part in a professional development opportunity with other educators from schools and kindergartens across Southeast Queensland.

This tour was led by Cecilia from Connecting the Dots through Culture, an organisation dedicated to helping educators meaningfully embed Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander practices into everyday practice.

We toured to the town of Cherbourg, where the history was shared of Aboriginal people who were forcibly removed and brought here from all over Queensland and Northern New South Wales to live on this government reserve. Local guides explain this history to us from inside the ration shed museum and took us through the dormitory exhibition.

This opportunity was a deep and meaningful experience that allowed for shared reflection on Australia’s true history. In yarning circle, we reflected on our roles in leading truth telling in age-appropriate ways to children and the importance of recognising the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to Queensland’s’ history.
